🗞️ Generative AI is not the same thing as stealing

Illustrator Henrik Tamm made a strong statement in Svenska Dagbladet, arguing that generative AI is theft, and moreover, it should not be allowed for use by people who lack talent.

I wrote a response:

"Illustrator Henrik Tamm claims that image creation with the help of generative AI is theft. Moreover, he argues that it is wrong for talentless people to use these tools. His allegation of theft is based on the fact that these AI tools are trained on large amounts of work created by others, without permission or payment.

But how is this different from how Tamm learned his craft? He has been inspired by other artists and illustrators, learned their techniques, and now uses these to create his own artworks. Has he asked for permission or paid them for this? Of course not."
